Week 4 - MKTG 6101 - Linkedin

Hello everyone!

This week I wanted to dive a little further into the discussion of Linkedin. Prior to this class, I had not used or even created a Linkedin account because I thought it was more of a social media page which followed the same toxic social media norms the way Facebook and Instagram do. After creating an account and being active for about 5 weeks now, I can see that there are some really clear similarities as well as distinctions.

Similarities include being able to like, comment, and share posts that others have done. You can also customize your profile page to reflect who you are. However, that is where the differences begin. Your profile is based on your work experience, your career/business interests, and your educational background.

One thing that stood out to me was that the whole point of creating a Linkedin account was so that you can connect with business recruiters and vice versa. Therefore, your profile is available to anyone and everyone (with a Linkedin account) to view.

I take my privacy seriously and am not too keen on having strangers viewing my personal information about where I went to school, work, and live at currently. I can definitely see the advantages to having a Linkedin, there is no doubt about that. I just personally feel like the similarities are too apparent between Linkedin and other forms of social media, and it’s really easy to fall back into that toxic state of mind.
Just some food for thought.

Thank you for reading!

Until next time,
